Richard M. Highsmith

Richard M. Highsmith Since receiving his Masters Degree in Psychology, Rick has been a mental health counselor, managed and co-owned a consulting business and owned a wholesale business selling to the hospitality industry. Throughout these various careers, he continued to be a trainer and teacher for the largest Community College in the U.S.

In addition to teaching negotiation skills, Rick has "lived it" in businesses he owned. As a mental health counselor, he worked with conflicted families helping them resolve the complicated issues driving their individual interests. In his consulting business, he managed a network of approximately fifty Mental Health Professionals. That period of his life is fondly remembered as "trying to herd cats." Rick learned the value of listening to determine needs, while working toward consistency in the delivery of service.

Thinking he was leaving the human services field, Rick bought a wholesale business in 1990. He quickly learned it is people, not product, who make any business successful. He spent over a decade negotiating with existing and potential employees, customers and vendors. After growing this business ten fold, he sold it and has returned to training on a full-time basis.

Rick is a sought after trainer and speaker for Fortune 500 companies. His messages focus on the value of collaboration and on how dynamic communication improves team effectiveness. Rick has been a guest lecturer at Harvard Business School; trained officers of an international cruise ship line; and worked throughout North America and Europe. Having studied improvisational comedy for one year, Rick recognizes how humor enhances the learning experience.

Rick's family includes his wife of thirty-five years, their adult son, daughter-in-law and two precocious granddaughters. A close second on the passion scale are Scuba diving and boating. Recently renting a house in Key Largo for his son's 30th birthday, with the whole family in tow AND diving approached nirvana!
