Dr. Curtis Johnson
Dr. Curtis M. Johnson is a practicing dentist in private practice and is recently retired from the New York State Department of Correctional Services (NYSDOCS). While serving the department he was a Certified Situation Controller (known better as the Hostage Negotiator). He retired as Senior Trainer and Senior Hostage Negotiator (Facility based). As trainer, he specializing in numerous topics like "How to Handle Difficult People", "How to Handle the Angry and Emotional Personality" and perfected skills in counteracting Verbal Dirty Fighting as well as in Conflict Resolution.
Since 1999, Dr. Johnson has brought a unique background to The Negotiation Skills Company that sets him apart from other members of the TNSC crew.
Curtis' interest began at Colby College with an undergraduate interest in public speaking debates, winning at most competitions and a Pre-Doctoral program in Philosophy, graduating with honors. With Dental Education and the practice of Dentistry as a "short" hiatus, he continued his negotiation and conflict resolution interests with NYSDOCS and New York University's formal graduate program at the Wagner School.
As Team Leader for the Crisis Intervention Unit at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a 2,300 man maximum-security state penitentiary, he initiated the Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing Unit (CISD), that has since gone statewide with even more formal training. Dr. Johnson is an invited mediator with the Yonkers Mediation Society and the NYS Court systems.
As a public speaker on many of the above topics, the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) and other prominent organizations frequently invite Dr. Johnson to their sessions that are commonly presented to standing room only audiences.
Curtis, as many negotiators will attest, is a problem solver "only in training" with his wife, Jackie, and two teenage daughters. After his busy retirement 'practice' schedule, speaking engagements and his churches Men's Choir schedule, his relaxation includes racquetball, 'flying singles and twins' and a good movie on the weekends.
