The Change In My Work Schedule Will Keep Me Out Of School

From: Leopoldo, Los Angeles

Question: I have over four years experience at my job, I'm applying for a higher position. My current work days are Monday through Friday but it will change in two weeks to Tuesday through Saturday. The job that I'm applying for is scheduled Monday through Friday. I need Monday through Friday because I'm in school. Should I tell them during the interview what my plans are. P.S. I have one more month for my next school semester to begin, I go to school Saturday.

Response: When you have a crucial interest in an element of a negotiation, you have an obligation to yourself to raise the issue at the appropriate time during the process. Not informing your employer of the impact of the work schedule on your education does not serve your interest -- and may be against your employer's interest as well.

You should begin by asking your employer how they feel about your continuing education, particular if it adds to the value you bring to the job. If you are studying a skill that has no relevance to your job, the odds are that your employer won't care; but if you can demonstrate that your education will make you a more valuable, knowledgeable, productive employee, the employer is more likely to respond favorably to your question.

It may well be that you and your employer can find some creative way to modify the new schedule so you won't miss the educational opportunity.

At the same time you should be making inquiries at the school to find out whether they offer any schedule flexibility: night classes or classes on other days. Perhaps there are other schools in the area that have better schedules that will give you credit for courses you have already taken.

Focus on your interests: having a good job, getting education, etc. and do a good job of asking questions at both your worksite and academic institutions. If you don't ask for something, you won't get it.

Good luck,
Steve
