Should We Think of Negotiation as a Problem?
From: Kenneth, Kilkenny, Ireland
Question: Could you tell me exactly why negotiation is commonly a problematic area???
Response: Negotiation is the way people trade things of value in a civilized manner. Sometimes those things that are being traded, the bargaining chips, are of highly emotional content. In those circumstances, the negotiating process could itself be pretty emotional, and for people to whom emotions are threatening, the negotiating process itself might be considered a problem.
If the negotiating process is fair and the parties treat one another with respect, negotiation can be a very satisfying way for people to interact. When I told my father of my plans to start a company to teach people how to negotiate and that some people are afraid to negotiate, he was surprised. "But negotiating is fun!" was his reaction.
May all your negotiations be civilized and rewarding.
