How Can I Get The Company To Pay My College Fees?
From: Kelly, Georgia, USA
Question: How can I get my company to pay all or some of my tuition for college. I've got a meeting set up with the CFO in regards to this benefit.
Response: Does your company have a history of paying for any form of education for employees other than in-house training in the specific skills needed to do particular jobs? Does your company bring in outside trainers who focus on what are called soft skills, on personal development?
From the other side, why should your company offer any support to the financial costs of your education? If you go to college while working full time, will that reduce your productivity? After you've completed your formal education, will your skill level be such that it raises your productivity? And if you are more productive after the education, will you have earned yourself a raise in pay, a promotion, or even the chance of getting a better job someplace else?
Act as a devils advocate. Write out a list of questions you should ask to learn what is most likely to convince the CFO to cough up the dough. Is it a matter of productivity, gaining a more skilled work force, setting a good example in the area of employee relations? Ask your CFO what he/she sees as the benefits to the company of having you get more education. If the response indicates enthusiasm, then you may well be on the right track.
Good luck.
