What Should I Do About Relocation?
From: Denis, Oceanport, New Jersey
Question: I am interviewing for a job in another city. I am wondering how much time I should ask for relocating, from the time they offer me the job and I accept it. I own my house and it would take time to pack up, clean the house, get it ready for rent or sale, and also find a place to live in the new city. So I cant show up at the new job in
just a couple of weeks. The company of course would want me to start ASAP. What is the usual, customary and reasonable time period for relocation? Maybe there is a range within which I can negotiate? One friend said he received two months which sounds reasonable to me but I am not sure if this particular company would find that unacceptable.
Thanks for your opinion!
Response: You should calculate how much time you need for the relocation process, then ask for just a little bit more to give yourself a cushion in case there are external factors that cause delays. If the company has hard and fast rules about relocation time
allowances, then you have to figure out whether you can accomplish everything within that time period. If the time limits are a problem when it comes to selling or renting your house, you should be straightforward with your employer in asking about what kind of assistance they can give you during that process.
In this case, letting your employer know what you want and why you want it in a reasonable way should serve you best.
Good luck,
Steve
