The Bid Process Worked; Should I Use It Again?

From: Lynn, Rochester, New York

Question: We recently got several estimates for vinyl siding and installation on our house. One estimate from a contractor we had used before was $4000 dollars higher than a new contractor (who came with personal references and is using like for like product). In the end we chose to go with the new contractor and so far I have been very pleased. Next year we anticipate being in the market for a new roof, this contractor is aware and of course wants the job. I like the quality of his work and so far his price on the siding. How do I avoid him jacking up the price on the roof because I'll be a return customer. I think the only answer will be to get a second or third estimate but I also don't want to offend him - he's done good by me so far??

Response: You should get bids from more than one contractor for your roof. I would not assume your siding contractor will bump up the price because you’re a return customer — frankly unless he’s a real dope, knowing that you think enough of him to invite him to bid on the next job should increase his desire to have his bid accepted.

Each job he does for you should be treated as separate. Let him know he got the current job as a result of a bid process and tell him that the success of that process — yielding you both good price and good service — has convinced you of the value of having the roof project bid as well.

Good luck,
Steve
